Grieving friends and family of a Malaysian man buried at the cemetery by the Kelibang Mosque have been heartened by a white kitty who refuses to leave their loved one’s side.
90-year-old Ismail Mat’s son Hamid said the cat walked for 5km to attend his father’s funeral.
“The cat then followed me to the cemetery and scratched the soil on the grave, as though it was calling my father,” he told Hamzah Osman.
Mat’s grandson, who goes by the name Soffuan CZ on Facebook, said the cat could not be moved.
“While the talqin was being read at the funeral, the white cat came and started circling the grave,” he said on Facebook.
“My grandfather was the only one who cared for the cat while he was alive.”
Mat, a father of 13 died of old age after falling ill a month ago and had a particular soft spot for cats.
“When our friend was in the world, he loved cats,” a friend said.
“He often took them in from off the street.”
Another grandson said he kept 10 cats at his home.
The loyal white cat has been named Putih, the Indonesian word for “white” because of its fur.
“Our family visits the graveyard and feeds it every day,” one friend said.
Another report indicates the white cat has been taken in.
