The beginning of the month of August lit the torch to mark the cutting of the umbilical cord of the people of Ada from their suffering according to history. Efforts made by great ancestors to liberate the people and establish a community which today is an admirable tourist site have remained indelible.
The biggest celebration of Ada culture and traditions kicked off on August [2/08/ 2017], with a homecoming and bonfire night at the Aqua Safari Resort.
The festival, which is in its 80th year, one of the biggest festivals in Ghana, patronised by over 3 million people from all walks of life.
The entire Ada township witnessed the mass influx of people from all walks of life – those across the length and breadth of the country, Ghanaians in diaspora , expatriates , tourists, among others, who were present at the occasion to grace and celebrate the now 80 year old most spectacular, radiant and colorful culture display and history revealing Ada Asafotufiami festival.
His Eminence Djetse Abram Kabu Akuaku III, the paramount chief of the Ada traditional area and the entire Ada Traditional Council, announced the theme for this year’s celebration as “Peace, unity a tool for socio-economic transformation of Ada traditional area”
Dignitaries present at the occasion included former President Jerry John Rawlings, Council of State Member, Honourable Dr Nii Kotey Dzani, Deputy Interior Minister, Henry Quartey and MP of the Ada Constituency, Honourable Comfort Doyoe Cudjoe Ghansah and many others.
The festival Asafotufiami, literally means firing of muskets by warriors. It is celebrated by the people of Ada in the Dangme East district in commemoration of their ancient wars with neighboring tribes such as the Ewe.
This year’s event, began on Thursday [03/08/2017] with each of the ten clans referred to in the local Ada parlance as “we” converged at a designated ground separately to reminisce family events and plan for the future of the younger generation.
Elders and some members of the ten clan “we” offer appellation to the ancestors and gods of the land by pouring libation and offering significant sacrifices.
On the Friday, ancient war tactics employed by the people in battles were demonstrated by warriors of the land. The warriors enter the bushes in their war cloths holding the muskets dramatizing how their ancestors fought battles.
The Ada political and traditional heads (chiefs) cleanse themselves as a purification rite by washing their feet in the Ada river (river Volta) in readiness for the grand durbar.
The grand durbar was held on the Saturday. On this day, the satellite chiefs of each ‘we’ – Kabiaweyumu, Kabiawetsu, Kabiawe-Kponor, Kudjrabge, Korgbo, Ohuewem, Adibiwe, Dangnebiawe, Lomobiawe and Tekperbiawe- converged to pledge and renew their allegiance to the paramount chief, Nene Ada.
Significant activities such as speeches delivery by Ada political leadership and a government representative, football competition, athletics, beach parties, boat races, river excursions, street carnivals, among others, were set in motion to create an atmosphere of admiration and excitement.
The durbar is climaxed by a procession numerable brass band contingents which amazingly is mainly women representing various occupational associations. Interspersed with the women brass band processions are firing of muskets by young men who are initiated into the art.
On Sunday, there is an open-air church service to thank the almighty God for his guidance and protection.
There were amazing performances from some top artistes in Ghana in climaxing the week-long celebration.
