Traders selling on and/or along the road from the Ashaiman main market through the traffic to the Unibank area, have been evacuated by the task-force of the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly (AshMA).
The surprising eviction exercise was carried out in the wee hours of Monday morning [14/08/2017].
Table, boxes and other make-shift structures on which trading items belonging to the traders were displayed, were all scattered or demolished by the task force.
Some aggrieved traders said “we’ve been ask by the task force not to sell on the road of which some of us have complied. Why then have they included we those selling on the pavement in the demolishing exercise? “.
Some passersby and drivers on the contrary expressed a passionate approval of the exercise, according to them the activities of the traders hampers convenient movement on and/or along the area.
“I am very happy that their belongings have been scattered. It serves them right. Why? These traders have taken over the road making movement and/or driving in area very difficult..
Because their items are always released to them upon pleas whenever AshMa seizes them, these women think that they can always have their way. It serves them right. I wish this exercise continues to permanently clear the road” a driver said.
Some traders who spoke to ashaimanonline concerning the exercise, gave a shocking revelation. The traders claim they pay Ghc5.00 daily for permit to sell along the road and on the pavement, not to AshMA, but to a man they referred to as “Taller” and some other unknown thug-looking boys who to them are in charge of the place.
They agitated that if the situation has warranted police arrest of “recalcitrant” traders, then unscrupulous ‘Taller’ must also be arrested since he collects money from them to permit them selling at the unauthorized area.
This exercise of evacuating traders and hawkers along roads and demolishing items and structures seem to have become perennial, it is almost becoming a normal periodic activity by the AshMA.
While some laud the activity of clearing the road to enhance pedestrian and vehicular movement, others perceive the act to be too harsh due to the use of draconian measures to achieve the result.
