Report reaching ashaimanonline.com reveals that President Nana Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) donated GHc35,000 to Alfred Agbesi Woyome, the businessman at the centre of the GHc51 million judgement debt saga.
The party made the donation when they attended the burial of Woyome’s mother, according to a report by Accra-based Adom FM.
The report said, of the GHc35,00, the NPP donated GHc20,000 while the president gave Ghc15,000.
The Adom FM report added that four ministers were sent to represent the NPP at the funeral, which was held at Dabala in the Volta Region.
The news that the NPP had lent financial support to the Alfred Woyome could create doubts in the minds of some Ghanaians about the ability of the government to retrieve the GHc51 million Woyome owes the state.
Ahead of the 2016 election, the Akufo-Addo pledged to retrieve the money, which past administrations tried unsuccessfully to retrieve.
It is not clear if it remains a priority for the administration, as no major action has been taken to retrieve it.
Nana Ayew Afriyie, an NPP MP for the Effiduase-Asokore Constituency, however insisted in an Adom FM interview that the government was committed to retrieving the Woyome cash.
He said the GHc35,000 donation to the businessman would not hinder the retrieval process in any way.
